Swan River

Swan River’s historic background, dated as far back as the 1700's, has been closely bound to the fur trade. The courageous, hardy fur traders and their native helpers created the first industries. They established trails or roads of commerce, experimented with agriculture and made it necessary to establish schools and churches, long before the recognized date of settlement in 1897-98. The town itself was incorporated in 1908.

Swan River’s local economy is based on agriculture, forestry and tourism. Due to the fertile farmlands there are many cereal grains and specialty crops grown as well as livestock operations throughout the Valley. Forestry provides employment for hundreds and benefits the valley economy by producing lumber, oriented strandboard and pulpwood.

Swan River is a favourite stopping place for tourists travelling in the Parkland Region of Manitoba. Visitors to this area may enjoy a stroll through the Legion Park on the paved pathways along the river or an afternoon at the S.V. Historical Museum, located app. one mile north of Swan River.

The Centennial Arena is also a great place to spend time, in the summer with public swimming at the pool and in winter with public skating and hockey games. Visitors also enjoy shopping in the thriving and exciting business community which has many unique and welcoming shops.

For those who enjoy the great outdoors we have easy access to many lakes. Camping, fishing and hiking are just a few of the many things to enjoy.
